Taiwan tertiary science programs seen better than China's

2011/06/12 Taipei, June 12 (CNA) Taiwan universities are superior to those in mainland China in terms of science and technology, biotechnology, agriculture and teaching philosophies, according to the China Senior College Exhibition Organization Committee. The committee, supervised by the Association of Higher Education under China's Ministry of Education, made the remark at a press conference that was held Saturday to promote Taiwan's universities to Chinese students ahead of the June 16 application deadline set by the Taiwanese government. According to the officials on the Shanghai-based committee, Taiwan university departments use more modern teaching methods in the areas of science and technology, biotechnology, agriculture, tropical medicine, cultural and creative studies, fashion, management, and finance and economics. As a result, Taiwan universities are ahead of their counterparts in China, the committee said. In addition, it said, Taiwanese universities tend to place more emphasis on holistic education. Generally, Taiwan's higher education system, which has been in place for more than 60 years, is superior to China's, the committee said. Taiwan passed a law last August to allow the admission of Chinese students to Taiwan universities from this year. At the event in China Saturday, six schools -- Ming Chuan University, Yuan Ze University, Providence University, Chung Yuan Christian University, Chaoyang University of Technology, and TransWorld University -- promoted their programs via the committee. In a world ranking of universities released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University last year, National Taiwan University ranked 127th, which put it in first place among schools on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the committee noted.
