850,000 Britons do not know they have diabetes and could be missing health checks that would spot life-threatening complications

By JENNY HOPE PUBLISHED: 00:24 GMT, 11 June 2012Almost one in 70 people are living with undiagnosed diabetes and are running the risk of 'devastating' complications Around one in 70 people in Britain suffer from type 2 diabetes but do not realise it, a charity has warned. Diabetes UK says 850,000 adults with diabetes have not been diagnosed and are missing out on health checks that could stop life-threatening complications. This equates to one passenger on a full double-decker bus or more than 1,000 supporters at a packed Wembley Stadium. The figures, released today to mark the start of Diabetes Week, suggest most people will have a friend or family member who has the condition but does not know it. The soaring rate of type 2 diabetes – the kind that mostly affects middle-aged people – is being fuelled by obesity, say experts. It is also strongly linked to related factors such as leading a sedentary lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet. Nine out of ten people with diabetes have type 2. It occurs when the body gradually loses the ability to process blood sugar, leading to high levels that can damage the body's organs. Diabetes UK is urging people to find out if they are at high risk, because the longer the condition is left untreated, the greater the danger of devastating complications such as blindness, kidney failure, strokes and amputation.

Fat-busting, super diet pill could help beat obesity by preventing those hunger pangs City children far more likely to have food allergies than those living in the country Previous research suggests it can go undiagnosed for up to ten years and that 50 per cent already have signs of complications by the time they are diagnosed. Barbara Young, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said 'When you consider the potentially devastating health consequences of Type 2 diabetes, it is shocking that so many people have the condition and do not know it. 'These figures show that every time we walk down our local high street, we are likely to be walking past people who have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes.Diabetes type 2 is most commonly caused by obesity but can also be an effect of leading an inactive lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet 'This is a real concern because it is only by getting the condition diagnosed early that people can start getting the treatment they need to prevent serious health complications, including blindness, amputation, kidney failure and stroke. 'Getting these people diagnosed is a race against time and unfortunately it is a race we are all too often losing. 'We are also encouraging people to talk to their friends and family about Type 2 diabetes. ' Making them aware that someone can have it for a number of years without realising it could be the vital first step towards someone being diagnosed and getting the healthcare that can give them the best chance of a long and healthy life.'Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include being overweight, having a large waist and being physically inactive. Older people and people from a black or South Asian background are also at higher risk, as are people with a family history. To help identify people who are at high risk, Diabetes UK and Bupa have launched a series of healthy lifestyle roadshows that will visit 50 locations over the next few months. The roadshow teams will refer people who are at high risk to their GP for advice and support to treat it, or prevent its onset. The series of roadshows is being launched today with an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the number of waists measured in eight hours

Less than 6 hours sleep significantly increases risk of a stroke even if you are fit and healthy    By TAMARA COHEN PUBLISHED: 05:29 GMT, 11 June 2012   If you need an excuse for a long lie-in, this could be it. Those of us who regularly get fewer than six hours of sleep a night are at significantly increased risk of stroke, a study suggests. Researchers found that those in middle age who skimped on sleep were more likely to suffer stroke symptoms than those who got at least nine hours of shut-eye – even if they were a healthy weight and with no family history of stroke.Make sure you get your 40 winks: If you have a habit of sleeping less than 6 hours it could lead to a stroke More than 5,000 participants, who were between 45 and retirement age, were monitored for three years as part of the US study. Those who slept for fewer than six hours were most likely to experience symptoms such as numbness or weakness down one side of their body, dizziness, loss of vision or a sudden inability to express themselves verbally or in writing. Scientists at the University of Alabama said the impact of sleep deprivation was a major one, even after taking into account age, weight and other known risks such as high blood pressure. The participants were divided into five groups according to how many hours a night they slept. They were asked to report their symptoms every six months.
A study by Warwick University showed that lack of sleep is linked to stroke and heart disease Co-author Virginia Howard, a professor of epidemiology, said: 'Many people can have these symptoms and not recognise them as a precursor to having a stroke, and perhaps not even mention them to their doctor.'Sleeping habits can exacerbate the potential for these symptoms, which are internationally recognised as putting people at extraordinary risk of subsequent stroke.'It is already known that sleep apnea – a breathing problem which produces poor quality sleep – is linked to strokes.  A study of hundreds of thousands of participants by Warwick University last year also linked lack of sleep to increased incidence of both strokes and heart disease. But the latest study focuses on the early symptoms of strokes, which are often ignored. Professor Howard's team plan to continue monitoring the participants for several more years. She said: 'It will be very interesting to see what the stroke rate is, and whether early detection may have helped.'Dr Megan Ruiter, lead author of the study, which will be presented today at the American Association of Sleep Medicine's annual conference, speculated that lack of sleep could be a precursor to more traditional stroke risk factors. Dr Clare Walton of the Stroke Association said: 'Previous studies suggest that regularly getting fewer than six hours or morethan nine hours of a sleep a night can increase your chances of having a stroke but much more research is needed.'

Rinser toothbrush doubles as a mouth-rinsing fountain   By Ben Coxworth  16:20 June 8, 2012 The Rinser is a toothbrush that uses your tap to create a fountain for rinsing the toothpaste foam out of your mouth  Tired of having to hold back your hair when you stick your mouth under the tap to rinse the toothpaste foam out of your mouth? Don’t like using that water-spotty, rarely-washed glass? Well, perhaps the Rinser toothbrush is what you need.  Designed by New York-based Amron Experimental (which also brought us the Keybrid carabiner key), the Rinser simply has a water scoop and connected spout built into its handle. When streaming tap water falls into that scoop, it shoots up and out of the spout, creating a fountain that the user can gulp from.  It also features a replaceable head, so users won’t have to rebuy that fancy handle every time the bristles get worn out.The Rinser is currently available for preorder, for US$22 – the retail price will be $34.99. If you have a small kingdom to support and really want to save money, you can preorder 900 of the things for $9,500. If money is no object, on the other hand, you can buy the original prototype for $3,800 ... and, if you just like the idea of turning your tap into a fountain, you also might want to check out the Tapi.
