Computex will spotlight wearable devices May 31, 2015, 12:24 am TWNTAIPEI--Computex Taipei, the largest computer exhibition in Asia, is expected to place wearable devices under the spotlight to show off the latest innovation of the global high-tech industry, organizers said Saturday. Computex, the second largest information communications technology trade show in the world, will have exhibitors showcase a wide range of wearable products, such as smart watches, smart bracelets, smart glasses and even smart garments, organizers said. The exhibition, which has entered its 35th year, is scheduled to kick off on June 2 and run through June 5 at the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC), TWTC's Nangang Exhibition Hall and the Taipei International Convention Center. A total of 1,700 high-tech firms from all over the world will display their products in 5,000 booths at Computex, organizers said, adding that the exhibition is expected to attract more than 130,000 visitors, including 38,000 international potential buyers. Market analysts said that after Apple Inc. unveiled the Apple Watch in April, enthusiasm toward wearable devices in the global market has been boosted significantly. Analysts said that other international brands, such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Corp. and LG Corp. and Japan's Sony Corp. are gearing up to launch their own wearables to compete with Apple. The market has had high hopes that wearable devices will become a critical part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and will be used in a broad range of applications, including health, retail, manufacturing and even military arenas, analysts said. The IoT refers to devices of all types, such as security monitors, vacuum cleaners and mobile phones, connected to the Internet and to each other to create a more interconnected user experience. In addition to international brands, more than 20 local research groups and manufacturers, such as the Taiwan government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (工業技術研究院), Taiwan Textile Research Institute (紡織產業綜合研究所), Brinno (邑錡), GlobalSat WorldCom (環天世通), HOLUX Technology (長天科技) and Guidercare (蓋德科技) will take part in the Computex's wearable device exhibition. These Taiwanese exhibitors are expected to introduce their gadgets, some of which will be used for health purposes to monitor heartbeats and blood oxygen levels. According to market information advisory firm International Data Corp. (IDC), worldwide wearable device shipments for 2015 are expected to hit 45.70 million units, sharply up from 19.60 million units recorded in 2014.
